Panathinaikos makes threes to hold off Galatasaray

Panathinaikos Athens hit 6 of its 13 triples in the fourth quarter to help it pick up an important victory in the playoff race by holding off Galatasaray Liv Hospital Istanbul 84-86 in a dramatic fashion on Friday night. Panathinaikos improved to 7-5 in Group F, and could end up in third place by the end of Round 12 depending on other results, while Galatasaray dropped its ninth consecutive decision and fell to 2-10. Panathinaikos briefly pulled away for the first time in the first quarter, but the hosts quickly rallied back. It was 38-40 at halftime before the Greens pulled away early in the third with back-to-back triples from James Gist for a 41-51 advantage. But Galatasaray came back again behind the effort of Patric Young, and went in front 59-57 late in the third quarter. However, the Greens hit 6 three-pointers in the first seven minutes of the fourth and built 70-81 margin, but Galatasaray was not done. An 8-0 run got the hosts within 83-84 with 15 seconds to go, but Panathinaikos made enough free throws the rest of the way to prevail. Esteban Batista collected 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals in victory. Gist also scored 14 and Vlantimir Giankovits had 13 points. Dimitris Diamantidis added 11 points with 9 assists, and Loukas Mavrokefalidis contributed 10 points. Young led Galatasaray with 24 points and 9 rebounds. Zoran Erceg scored 19 points, Vladimir Micov had 17 points and 7 assists, while Justin Carter had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.

First quarter: Panathinaikos pulls away behind Diamantidis triples

Young scored inside to open the scoring, and Gist answered from close range for the Greens before Batista scored a layup and Gist made a jumper. Erceg and Batista traded put-backs, and Young cut the deficit to 7-8 with an alley-oop dunk. But Batista scored a reverse layup and Giankovits stole a ball and raced for a fastbreak layup. After a layup from Young, Diamantidis nailed back-to-back triples for a 9-18 cushion. Those 2 threes also put Diamantidis in sole possession of sixth place on the Euroleague’s career list. After a timeout, Micov hit a jumper and Young added a pair from the foul line to make it 13-18. However, Giankovits made another steal and finished a fast break by tossing a pass to Gani Lawal for an alley-oop dunk. After Erceg hit a turnaround baseline jumper for the hosts, Giankovits's triple helped the visitors lead 16-23 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Galatasaray rallies with an 11-0 run

Giankovits extended the difference to 16-25 with a driving layup at the start of the quarter, but a corner triple from Erceg started the hosts' run. A layup from Carter and a triple from Micov got Galatasaray within 1. As the Greens were held scoreless for more almost four minutes, Erceg continued Galatasaray’s run with a three-point play for a 27-25 edge, before Loukas Mavrokefaliids hit a long jumper to end an 11-0 run and Antonis Fotsis made a put-back for Panathinaikos to regain the lead. DeMarcus Nelson extended it with a fastbreak dunk. Young scored a couple more free throws, but Janis Blums buried a three-pointer to make it 29-34. Martynas Pocius answered with a three for the hosts, and after Nikos Pappas drove for a layup for the visitors, Pocius finished a fast break with a dunk to close within. Mavrokefalidis scored a layup keeping Panathinaikos in front before the final minute of the half, during which Young scored from close range, Fotsis had a tip-in for the visitors, and Kerem Gonlum’s jumper made it 38-40.

Third quarter: Young keeps the hosts in the game

Eleftherios Bochoridis sank a three at the start of the half and Batista scored an easy layup for a 38-45 lead. After Young fought his way for a dunk-plus-free throw, Gist nailed back-to-back triples to make it a 10-point game. Carter drove to the hoop for Galatasaray, but Batista converted an alley-oop dunk on a pass from Diamantidis. Young answered with a big put-back dunk and Carter drove the lane for a monster one-handed slam over Batista. A layup from Ender Arslan got the hosts within 49-53. After a timeout, Bochoridis drove for a layup, but Micov bettered it with a three-point play and followed it with free throws to close within 54-55. Pappas hit a runner, but Erceg nailed a triple to tie things at 57-57. Young put Galatasaray in front with a spin move inside, but Mavrokefalidis scored from close range to make it 59-59 at the end of the quarter.

Fourth quarter: The Greens pull away again before holding on

Micov went through the traffic for a layup as both teams stepped up a notch on defense. Mavrokefalidis hit a jumper for the Greens, and after Micov drove for another layup, Giankovits sank a three-pointer to lead 63-64. After a pair of foul shots from Erceg, Giankovits nailed another three for a 65-67 edge. Erceg hit 2 more from the foul line, but Blums buried back-to-back triples from the left corner for a 6-point cushion. After a timeout, Gist nailed a three and Batista scored an easy layup for a 67-78 advantage. Arslan snapped a 0-11 run with a three-pointer, but Diamantidis hit Panathinaikos’s sixth triple in seven minutes of the quarter. Threes kept raining as Carter hit from downtown for the hosts, before Batista and Pocius traded baskets from close range as Panathinaikos held a 75-84 advantage with two minutes to go. However, Young made 4 from the line, Erceg drove for a fastbreak layup, and Micov’s free throws made it 83-84 with 15 seconds to go. Diamantidis and Gist split foul shots for Panathinaikos, while Young did the same on the other end. Carter stepped to the line with 7 seconds left and his team down 84-86, but missed both free throws. Blums grabbed a long rebound and ran out the clock as Panathinaikos secured the victory.

Olympiacos rallies past Efes 86-75 to storm into playoffs!

In an epic battle that neither team led by more than 6 points through the first 35 minutes, Olympiacos Piraeus owned the finish to take an 86-75 victory over visiting Anadolu Efes Istanbul and punch its ticket to the playoffs on Thursday. Despite playing without three injured regulars - Vassilis Spanoulis, Kostas Sloukas and Brent Petway - Olympiacos raised its record to 9-3 in Top 16 Group F and assured its place in the next round. Efes dropped to 5-7 but stayed tied for the fourth and final playoff spot. The game was marked by Dusan Ivkovic coaching from the Peace and Friendship Stadium visiting bench in a Euroleague game for the first time since he and Olympiacos won their second title together in 2012. His Efes team put up a battle that featured 10 lead changes and 10 ties during the first three-and-a-half quarters as Stratos Perperoglou matched his career high with 5 three-pointers against his former team. But Olympiacos found a spark in Ioannis Papapetrou, who had played just 12 minutes in two games this season before Thursday. His 10 points in 5 minutes to start the final quarter rallied the Reds offense to score 33 points in that quarter on the way to victory. Oliver Lafayette led the winenrs with 17 points, while Georgios Printezis scored 14 and pulled 12 rebounds, matching his career high on the boards. Papapetrou added 12 points, Othello Hunter and Vangelis Mantzaris 10 each. Perperoglou led Efes with 23, while Nenad Krstic added 12 and Dario Saric 10 plus 10 rebounds.

First quarter: Late push lifts Reds

Defenses rules for the first few possessions until Tremmel Darden hit an open three-pointer in transition to get the scoreboard rolling. Perperoglou soon popped a jumper for Efes, but Olympiacos got another three-ball from Mantzaris to make it 6-2. Saric bulled his way in for one basket then repeated the process and added a free throw for 5 consecutive points and his team's first lead, 6-7. A spin and layup got a brief lead back for Olympiacos, but only until Matt Janning was left open for the first three-pointer by Efes at 8-10. After a timeout, the Olympiacos offense repeated its mistake, leaving Janning free in the same corner for another triple. Bryant Dunston answered with a layup, but after Saric hit a free throw, Efes got a steal and fastbreak from Perperoglou to make it 10-16. Matt Lojeski and Hunter also scored inside for Olympiacos to set up a big finish that saw Printezis blast a go-ahead triple from the corner for a 17-16 lead after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Perperoglou leads Efes to tie

Free throws by Milko Bjelica took the lead back for Efes. Krstic, back from injury, dropped a hook of his own and assisted Bjelica on another to put the visitors up 17-22, forcing an Olympiacos timeout. Dimitris Katsivelis entered to spark the hosts with a layup and a steal that led to another on the fastbreak by Lafayette. After Bjelica finished an Efes fastbreak, Hunter slammed a lob. Birkan Batuk hit a three-pointer for the visitors that Lafayette answered with a two-point jumper, but Efes stayed ahead 25-27. Papapetrou, playing in just his third game this season, spun for a game-tying layup, which set up Lafayette for the go-ahead drop shot from the lane. Hunter ripped and returned an offensive rebound for a 31-28 Olympiacos lead. Perperoglou got 2 points back at the foul line and soon hit a step-back jumper to re-teak the lead, 32-33, for Efes. Krstic's finger roll added to the lead before Printezis broke loose for a sharp one-handed slam. With a timeout to set up the quarter's final play, Olympiacos found Dunston, who hit a free throw after 3 previous misses to forge a 35-35 tie at halftime.

Third quarter: Heurtel keeps Efes ahead

Perperoglou broke the tie with an open three-pointer right after the break, but at the other end, his former teammate Printezis matched him to make it 38-38. Efes did a good job of finding Krstic, who earned 4 perfect free throws before Dunston finished a pick-and-roll layup at 40-42. Mantzaris drove the lane to tie the score briefly, and after Krstic scored inside, Hunter did the same at 44-44. The game's top scorer so far, Perperoglou, found another three-pointer, his third. Mantzaris again drove inside, but Thomas Heurtel copied his teammate from the arc, giving Efes a 46-50 lead. Krstic got called for an unsportsmanlike foul, giving Lafayette a free throw that he added to with a driving layup to make it 49-50. Batuk then stepped up with a three-pointer for Efes. Hunter returned with a turnaround hook before Lojeski fed Printezis on the break for another tie, 53-53. Krstic made 1 of 2 free throws to restore Efes's lead, then Heurtel was ice-cold hitting a fastbreak three-pointer to make it 53-57 for Efes after 30 minutes.

Fourth quarter: Papapetrou leads take-over run

Papapetrou woke up the crowd with a triple to open the final quarter. After he forced a turnover on Efes, Papapetrou got to the foul line to tie it up, 57-57. And when his second free throw missed, an offensive rebound let Lafayette drive for the first Olympiacos lead of the second half, 59-58. Only seconds later, however, Perperoglou drilled another three-pointer, after which Bjelica's free throws upped the Efes lead to 59-62. Papapetrou again came to the rescue for Olympiacos with a back-down basket and free throw for a new tie, 62-62. Mantzaris found Dunston for a go-ahead basket, but Saric returned and hit free throws to make it 64-64. Lafayette stepped back and drilled a three-pointer. Saric made 2 more free throws, but then Papapetrou stopped and popped a triple to make it 70-66 with 5 minutes left. Lafayette then drilled his own shot from the arc to lift the crowd to its feet. After an Efes timeout, Batuk dialled up a restorative three-pointer for the guests, but Lafayette fed Dunston for a dunk and then Printezis hit his patented one-hander from the lane to make it 77-69. Perperoglou tried to revive Efes with a jumper, but Lojeski appeared out of nowhere with a triple for a nine-point lead, 80-71. A Krstic free throw and yet another triple from Perperoglou made it 80-75, but Printezis snuffed it out with a huge shot from the arc going into the final minute. When Lojeski scored on the break, it marked the first double-digit lead of the game, 86-75, and meant an early qualification to the playoffs for Olympiacos and their delighted home crowd.

Το heads out ουσιαστικά το μετέτρεπαν σε double team, αφού ο ψηλός του Ολυμπιακού έπαιρνε man to man το αντίπαλο γκαρντ.

In a game where neither team had a lead bigger than 7 points, Laboral Kutxa Vitoria edged Olympiacos Piraeus 74-73 on Friday night in Vitoria. Laboral improved to 5-6 in Top 16 Group F, where it shares fourth place with Anadolu Efes Istanbul. Mike James strung together 9 of his game-high 17 points for a 9-2 run that put Laboral up for good, 72-68 late in the fourth quarter. With 67 second remaining, Davis Bertans sank a long jumper, which turned out to be the difference in the game. Olympiacos had chances to win in the final minutes, but Laboral held on as James finished with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Bertans netted 15 and Fabien Causeur 13 points in victory. Olympiacos, which was without Vassilis Spanoulis, dropped to 8-3 and third place. Georgios Printezis collected 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Othello Hunter scored 14. Oliver Lafayette, who missed a potential game-winning triple, netted 8 in defeat.

First quarter: Bertans hits threes, but Olympiacos jumps in front

Vangelis Mantzaris scored inside to open the scoring, and after Causuer made a runner on the other end, Dunston scored from close range on consecutive possessions and Printezis finished a fastbreak with a dunk for a 2-8 lead. After a Laboral timeout, Bertans nailed a pair of triples to tie the game, but Matt Lojeski hit from downtown, too, to make it 8-11. Colton Iverson and Printezis traded baskets from close range, but Tornike Shengelia and Bertans nailed back-to-back three-pointers as the hosts went ahead 16-13. The Reds regained the lead with a basket from Lojeski and a monster dunk from Hunter. Causeur made a steal and raced for a layup, but baskets inside from Hunter and Printezis kept the visitors in front, and Sloukas drove for a layup to make it 19-23 at the end of the quarter.

Second quarter: The Reds keep slim lead

Sloukas kept running the visitors’ offense and fed Vasileios Kavvadas with a lovely pass for a layup. After a big dunk from Kim Tillie, Sloukas found Dimitrios Agravanis for a wide-open three and a 21-28 cushion. Oliver Lafayette sank a tough baseline jumper, but a step-back triple from Fernando San Emeterio and a fastbreak dunk from Bertans helped Laboral get within 29-30. Printezis nailed a triple and James countered with a baseline jumper. Mantzaris drove for a runner, but James raced for a fastbreak dunk to bring his team within 33-35. Olympiacos remained in front with a three-point play from Hunter, but San Emeterio banked in a tough baseline shot to make it 36-38 at halftime.

Third quarter: Teams trade blows, stay close

Shengelia drove for a layup, and Iverson had a put-back dunk to give Laboral the lead, but Tremmell Darden sank a triple to put the Reds up 40-41. The teams traded leads as Causeur twice drove to the basket, while Lojeski hit a long jumper. A fastbreak layup from Printezis and a triple from Lafayette gave the visitors a 44-48 advantage. Bertans made free throws, and Hunter responded with another dunk. After Ioannis Papapetrou and Mirza Begic traded quick layups, a corner triple from San Emeterio tied the score at 52-52. In the final minute of the quarter, free throws from Agravanis and Sloukas on one end, and Tillie at the other made it 53-55.

Fourth quarter: James leads Laboral to dramatic win

Agravanis buried a triple to open a 5-point margin as Olympiacos kept the hosts scoreless for almost three minutes until Causeur sank a triple, Laboral’s third attempt during the same trip down the floor. On the next possession, James hit from way downtown for a 59-58 lead. Hunter split free throws, but Tillie had a monster dunk and Causeur drove coast-to-coast for a layup and a 63-59 advantage with six minutes to go. After a timeout, Printezis banked in a pair of close range shots to tie it, before Lafayette knocked down a triple to go ahead 63-66. James split defenders to drive for a layup for the hosts, then made 5 of 5 from the foul line for a 70-66 difference. Hunter elevated high for an alley-oop dunk, but James made a steal under Olympiacos’s basket and scored a layup, his ninth straight point. On the other end, Sloukas answered with a basket-plus-foul for a 72-71 lead. Bertans sank a jumper with his toes on the 6.75-meter arc, but Hunter had another huge put-back dunk to make it 74-73. In the final minute, Printezis missed 2 free throws with 41 seconds remaining, and after Tillie’s baseline jumper rimmed out, Lafayette missed a potential game-winning triple before Laboral ran out the clock.

Panathinaikos improved to 6-5 and remained fourth in Group E, while Madrid dropped to 9-2 and saw its five-game winning streak come to an end. Madrid had previously qualified for the playoffs and kept first place despite the loss. Nikos Pappas paced the winners with 22 points on perfect shooting from the field and 7 of 8 from the line. DeMarcus Nelson added 16 points, while James Gist had 13 for Panathinaikos. Jaycee Carroll led Madrid with 16 points. Rudy Fernandez added 12 and Felipe Reyes and Sergio Llull each had 11 for the guests. Gist and Pappas helped Panathinaikos get a 19-15 lead after 10 minutes. A huge dunk in traffic by Nelson gave the Greens a 27-19 margin. Fernandez led a 2-10 run which saw Madrid tie the game, 29-29, but Gani Lawal and Gist stepped up to restore a 41-35 Panathinaikos edge at halftime. Pappas took over after the break with 12 third-quarter points, scoring in many different ways and giving Panathinaikos a 69-53 advantage after 30 minutes. Nothing changed from that moment, as the Greens kept a big margin all the way until the final buzzer.

First quarter: Gist, Pappas put Greens ahead

Diamantidis got Panathinaikos going with a turnaround jumper, which Esteban Batista followed with a layup for a 4-0 lead. Llull shocked the crowd with an off-balance three-pointer. Batista shined with his trademark reverse layup and an easy basket by Felipe Reyes kept Madrid within 6-5. Fernandez hit free throws that Loukas Mavrokefalidis erased with a baseline jumper. Gist took over with a fast break slam for a 10-7 Panathinaikos advantage. A.J. Slaughter buried a five-meter jumper, as Madrid struggled to find the right rhythm on offense. Llull stepped up with his second triple, but Gist restored a 14-10 Panathinaikos edge. After Gist split foul shots, K.C. Rivers struck from downtown. A one-handed floater by Pappas gave the Greens a 17-13 lead. Pappas kept pushing Panathinaikos with free throws, but a layup by Gustavo Ayon kept Madrid within 19-15 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Panathinaikos pads margin

Vlantimir Giankovits and Nelson gave Panathinaikos a 23-15 advantage early in the quarter. Fernandez took over with a one-handed floater, which Nelson matched with a put-back layup. Ayon tried to change things with a layup, but Nelson provided a highlight with a huge one-handed dunk in traffic that gave the Greens a 27-19 lead. Fernandez struck from downtown and free throws by Jonas Maciulis kept Madrid within 27-24. Sergio Rodriguez hit a mid-range jumper in transition that Pappas erased with a driving layup. Fernandez buried another triple to tie it at 29-29. Slaughter answered from downtown and Pappas added a step-back jumper that gave the Greens fresh air at 34-29. Lawal followed an alley-oop slam with a layup for a 38-29 Panathinaikos lead. Reyes and Jaycee Carroll made free throws and an alley-oop dunk by Marcus Slaughter brought the guests within 38-34. Gist hit a three-pointer and a free throw by Reyes fixed the halftime score at 41-35.

Third quarter: Pappas takes charge

Gist hit one from beyond the arc soon after the break and Janis Blums bettered Reyes's free throw with a wild three-pointer that made it a double-digit game for the first time, 47-36. Reyes answered from downtown and matched Batista's free throws with a put-back layup. Pappas joined the three-point shootout, too. Reyes kept pacing Madrid with foul shots before a jump hook by Mavrokefalidis boosted the Greens' lead to 54-42. Llull struck from beyond the arc and free throws by Ioannis Bourousis gave Madrid hope at 54-47. Batista scored down low and a wild three-point play by Pappas gave Panathinaikos a 59-47 cushion. Fernandez hit a mid-range jumper, but Nelson nailed a one-handed floater. A jumper by Llull kept Madrid within 61-51. Pappas made free throws and a circus shot by Nelson caused Madrid to stop the game at 65-51. Pappas scored again and exchanged foul shots with Rodriguez to keep the Greens way ahead, 69-53.

Fourth quarter: Plenty of time to celebrate!

Nelson shined with a driving layup early in the quarter, but Carroll did better with a bomb from downtown. Pappas stayed on fire with a layup in transition, as the game turned into an intense, physical battle. Madrid kept missing open shots, but a fast break layup by Carroll caused Panathinaikos to call timeout at 73-58. Nelson buried another three-pointer and Mavrokefalidis solved a pick-and-pop play with a five-meter jumper that sealed the outcome, 78-58, midway through the fourth quarter. Carroll kept trying to change things with a jumper, a three-pointer in transition and a fast break layup to bring Madrid a bit closer, 80-65. But everything was said and done and a huge fast break dunk by Gist allowed Panathinaikos to celebrate a very important home win in style.

Milaknis buries big shots as Zalgiris claims 100th Euroleague win

Zalgiris Kaunas held on late to beat Panathinaikos Athens 76-70 for the club’s 100th Euroleague victory this century. Zalgiris improved to 4-6 and fifth place in Top 16 Group E, while Panathinaikos remains in fourth at 5-5. The hosts led by as many as 14 early in the third quarter, but Nikos Pappas led the Greens all the way back. The score was tied on three occasions in the fourth quarter and Pappas gave the visitors a slim lead, but Arturas Milaknis buried back-to-back threes to put his team up 70-66 with three minutes to go and the Lithuanian champs held on the rest of the way. Will Cherry paced the Zalgiris attack with 18 points, Paulius Jankunas added 14, James Anderson 13 and Milaknis 12 – all on threes. Pappas paced Panathinaikos with 21 points, Vlantimir Giankovits added 11 and Esteban Batista finished with 10.

First quarter: Defensive stand helps hosts to early lead

There seemed to be a lid on the rim early as neither team scored for two-and-a-half minutes until Jankunas broke the ice with a jump shot. Cherry added a three-pointer before Dimitris Diamantidis found a cutting Batista for a slam and the visitors’ first points. Jankunas banked in a shot to make it 7-2. Giankovits and A.J. Slaughter went hard to the basket to bring the Greens within 1. After a TV timeout, Anderson buried a three. Batista scored in transition and Jankunas matched him to make it 12-8. Batista muscled his way to another bucket before Robertas Javtokas scored inside for the hosts. Milaknis completed a four-shot minute-long possession with a three-pointer. Nikos Pappas also hit from downtown to make it 17-13.

Second quarter: Cherry carries Zalgiris to double-digit advantage

Anderson kept the hosts in charge after he grabbed an offensive rebound, drew a foul and sank 2 shots. Pappas went through the Zalgiris defense for a layup, but Lukas Lekavicius answered with a long pull-up jumper. Panathinaikos closed to within 21-18 on a Pappas layup and DeMarcus Nelson free throw. Siim-Sander Vene recorded a layup-plus-foul thanks to a great pass from Darius Songaila. Nelson picked up a steal and lobbed a pass to Gani Lawal for a monster slam. Edgaras Ulanovas drilled an open triple to set a 28-20 advantage midway through the quarter. Cherry scored and Anderson dunked on the break for a 12-point lead. Antonis Fotsis stopped the bleeding with the triple, but Cherry responded with a pair of triples sandwiched around a Batista bucket inside. Batista added another slam and reached 10 individual points. Jankunas and Diamantidis each split free throws to end the half at 39-28.

Third quarter: Pappas rescues Greens from 14-point deficit

Milaknis sank a three to give the hosts their biggest lead yet, 42-28, but Giankovits responded with back-to-back threes. Zalgiris used a timeout, but the momentum had shifted. James Gist fought his way to a layup and Pappas sank a triple. Gist scored again to cap a 0-13 run. Cherry scored a tough layup in the paint – and the free throw that came within it – and then Javtokas scored in the paint to restore a 6-point cushion. Diamantidis scored his first basket only to see Jankunas knock down an open three. Pappas responded with a pair of threes to get within a single point. Vene’s basket was matched by Loukas Mavrokefalides. Then Pappas split free throws to tie the score at 52-52. The stalemate remained for over a minute - Giankovits missed twice from the line – as both teams missed shots. Mavrokefalides gave Panathinaikos its first lead with a three, but Anderson’s triple tied it at 55-55.

Fourth quarter: Milaknis buries the big shots

Songaila’s second chance basket and a Vene jumper were both matched by Gist to keep the score tied. Anderson was fouled by Giankovits – his fourth – shooting a three and made the resulting 3 shots for a 62-59 Zalgiris edge. Mavrokefalides drove for a tough layup, which Jankunas countered with a jump shot. Giankovits buried a three from the top of the key to make it 64-64 with five minutes remaining. Pappas gave the Greens a slim lead again, but a Milaknis three on the shot-clock buzzer brought the crowd to its feet at 67-66. Milaknis’s fourth three of the night came with three minutes left and put the difference at 4. Diamantidis and Cherry traded layups. Milaknis fouled out with 1:27 remaining. Cherry added free throws for a 6-point edge with 39 seconds to go. Nelson missed twice from the line with 25 seconds left, but Ulanovas missed 2 too. Pappas drove for a layup with 15 seconds remaining. Giankovits fouled out and Jankunas all but iced the game with the resulting free throws with 14.4 seconds to go.

Goudelock shines in Fenerbahce Ulker's pivotal win in Piraeus

Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul sent a message that echoed throughout the competition by downing Olympiacos Piraeus 64-73 in Group F at Peace and Friendship Stadium in Greece on Friday. Fenerbahce registered its seventh consecutive win and also grabbed its ninth straight road win - its last Turkish Airlines Euroleague road loss came on October 30. Fenerbahce and Olympiacos join CSKA Moscow in a three-way tie for first place, each with an 8-2 record. Fenerbahce also claimed the head-to-head tiebreak advantage over Olympiacos. Andrew Goudelock paced the winners with 24 points on 6-of-7 three-point shooting. Nemanja Bjelica added 16 points and 9 rebounds for Fenerbahce. Oliver Lafayette led Olympiacos with 14 points. Bryant Dunston scored 12 and Georgios Printezis had 11 while Vassilis Spanoulis dished 10 assists for the hosts. A wild three-pointer by Kostas Sloukas gave Olympiacos a 19-17 lead late in the first quarter, but a tip-in by Bjelica tied it at 19-19 after 10 minutes. An outstanding Goudelock helped Fenerbahce to a 25-32 lead, enough for the guests to keep a 35-39 edge at halftime. A three-pointer by Spanoulis tied the game at 46-46 midway through the third quarter, but Goudelock and Jan Vesely helped the guests regain the lead, 50-55, through 30 minutes. Three-pointers by Emir Preldzic and Bjelica sealed the outcome at 56-68 with two minutes left. Olympiacos kept trying but Fenerbahce cruised to a well-deserved, really important road win.

First quarter: Intensity rules the early going

Tremmell Darden got Olympiacos going with a turnaround jumper in a very physical start of the game. Free throws by Spanoulis soon gave the Reds a 4-1 lead. Hickman and Vangelis Mantzaris made free throws before a layup by Bogdan Bogdanovic kept Fenerbahce within 6-5. After Andrew Goudelock struck from downtown, Georgios Printezis hit his trademark jump hook in the lane. A dunk by Semih Erden put the guests back ahead, 8-10. Bryant Dunston shined with a big slam that Goudelock bettered with a triple. Othello Hunter took over with an alley-oop dunk and a close jumper by Printezis put the Reds back ahead, 14-13. Erden kept pacing Fenerbahce with a power layup. Mantzaris hit foul shots, but so did Hickman for a 16-17 Fenerbahce edge. Kostas Sloukas stepped up with an eight-meter bomb, but a tip-in by Bjelica tied the game, 19-19, after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Three-pointers give Fener the lead

Hickman nailed a corner three early in the second, as Fenerbahce improve its defense. Olympiacos was held scoreless for more than three minutes, while a free throw by Bjelica and a jump hook by Jan Vesely gave the guests a 19-25 edge. Spanoulis found Oliver Lafayette for a three-pointer, but Oguz Savas quickly answered with a put-back layup. Lafayette and Nikos Zisis split free throws and a layup by Dunston kept Olympiacos within 25-28. Goudelock found space with a wide open triple, as Fenerbahce started to circulate the ball better with Zisis and Emir Preldzic together. Vesely split free throws and a dunk by Dunston brought Olympiacos within 27-32. Darden split foul shots and Lafayette nailed a triple off the dribble for a 31-32 scoreline. Bjelica split free throws and a driving layup by Lafayette tied it at 33-33. Bjelica struck from beyond the arc and Goudelock copied him for a 35-39 Fenerbahce edge at halftime.

Third quarter: Goudelock keeps guests ahead

Dunston dunked again soon after the break, but Bjelica matched him with a driving basket for a 37-41 Fenerbahce lead. Bogdanovic briefly silenced the crowd with a big slam off the baseline, but Printezis followed free throws with a fast break layup. Dunston ignited the crowd with a huge dunk in traffic that Goudelock bettered with a big three-pointer. Spanoulis answered from downtown. Goudelock hit a one-handed floater in the lane, but free throws by Dunston tied it at 48-48. Goudelock nailed his sixth triple before free throws by Sloukas kept Olympiacos within 50-51. Vesely took over with a dunk, as the game turned into a battle. Vesely jumped to catch a high pass and put it in to give Fenerbahce a 50-55 lead.

Fourth quarter: Defense completes the job for Fener

Printezis split free throws early in the quarter, as Fenerbahce struggled to find the way to the basket. Olympiacos missed a couple of open shots and a layup by Savas gave Fenerbahce some fresh air at 51-57. A three-pointer by Preldzic forced the Reds to call a much-needed timeout, 51-60. The guests kept dominating the game with outstanding defense, but a three-pointer by Lafayette gave the Reds plenty of hope at 54-60. Hunter swished a jump hook that Bjelica bettered with a critical three-pointer. Olympiacos kept taking off-balance shots without much success and a wild basket by Goudelock sealed the outcome, 56-65, with over three minutes left. Both teams started to fight for the tie-break advantage, a critical issue to get the home court advantage in the upcoming playoffs. Another triple by Bjelica made it a double-digit lead for the first time, 56-68, and allowed Fenerbahce to finish off a near-perfect road win.

Olympiacos improved its defense in crunch time, as Printezis and Dunston stepped up to seal the outcome minutes before the final buzzer.

First quarter: Dunston sparks strong Olympiacos start

Tremmell Darden got Olympiacos going with a free throw and a put-back basket by Printezis gave the Reds a 0-3 lead. After Gentile hit a six-meter shot, Darden nailed a turnaround jumper and a layup by Bryant Dunston boosted the guests' lead to 2-7. Gentile kept pushing Milan with free throws, however Darden nailed a baseline jumper and Spanoulis found Dunston for a slam that caused the hosts to call timeout at 4-11. Dunston hit free throws and Spanoulis scored in penetration to cap a 0-8 Olympiacos run. Brooks struck from downtown and Daniel Hackett added a layup to bring Milan within 9-15. Matt Lojeski stepped up with a fast break layup and Printezis scored again to restore a double-digit Olympiacos lead, 9-19. Dunston took over with a wild dunk-and-foul, which Brooks matched with his own three-point play to keep Milan within 12-22 after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: Milan rallies, buts Reds respond

Joe Ragland stepped up with a backdoor layup early in the quarter, as Olympiacos tried a smaller lineup with Darden at power forward. Ragland scored again in penetration, before the Reds called timeout at 16-22. Brooks hit a step-back jumper, but Hunter scored around the basket. Another driving layup by Ragland made it a 4-point game. Darden nailed a stop-and-pop jumper, but Shawn James split foul shots and Brooks nailed a jumper of the dribble to bring the hosts within 23-26. Vangelis Mantzaris bettered Bruno Cerella's jumper with a corner triple. Cerella insisted with a driving basket, but Hunter hit a jump hook and a free throw by Spanoulis restored a 27-32 Olympiacos lead. Spanoulis hit a three-pointer and fed Hunter for an alley-oop slam, but Ragland answered from downtown and Linas Kleiza added a put-back basket to make it 32-37. Spanoulis and Printezis hit foul shots and a layup by Hunter gave the Reds a 32-42 advantage at halftime.

Third quarter: Gentile keeps home team alive

Hackett buried a six-meter jumper immediately after the break and a free throw by Brooks gave Milan hope at 35-42. Samardo Samuels dunked, but Mantzaris answered from downtown for a 37-45 Olympiacos lead. Gentile took over with an off-balance basket in transition and hit 3 of 4 free throws to keep Milan within 42-45. Oliver Lafayette found Printezis for a layup, as Olympiacos entered the foul penalty. After Hackett and Gentile split foul shots, Hunter scored down low. Gentile kept pacing the hosts with a backdoor layup, but Spanoulis did better with a triple and found Printezis for an alley-oop layup. Gentile scored again, but Ioannis Papapetrou came off the bench and immediately delivered with a three from the corner. After Brooks scored in penetration, Samuels added a layup and Gentile kept Milan within 54-57. Kostas Sloukas and Brooks exchanged jumpers before Spanoulis struck downtown for a 56-62 advantage. Hunter scored in the paint and Printezis added his trademark one-handed baseline jumper - from the same spot as the 2012 Euroleague-winning shot - to give Olympiacos a 56-66 margin.

Fourth quarter: Olympiacos stays strong to snatch victory

Hunter banked in a close shot early in the quarter to cap a 0-9 run. Gentile stepped up with a close jumper, which Sloukas bettered with a layup-plus-foul that made it a 13-point game. Gentile stayed on fire with a driving basket and free throws. Milan entered the foul penalty with over seven minutes left, but even though Sloukas made free throws, Kleiza answered from downtown to make it 65-73. Printezis took over with another backdoor layup and a close basket by Dunston kept Olympiacos out of trouble at 65-77. Milan struggled to score when it mattered most and a free throw by Dunston seemed to seal the outcome at 65-78 with three minutes left. David Moss nailed his trademark corner three-pointer and Gentile scored in the low post, but a three-pointer by Lojeski allowed Olympiacos to start celebrating yet another road win.
